"Feeling the Fear Down on the Farm
In its second season as a Haunt, Oasis Island of Terror near Trenton, NJ can still be called the new horror kid on the scare block, but to visit this single attraction walk through you wouldn’t know its still finding its way. Oasis offers a thirty two minute outdoor terror walk within sprawling fields of cattails and around a large pond that affords the owner / operator an immense area to provide appropriately spaced props and scare scenes interspersed with roaming ghouls and villains to good effect. Oasis Family Farms by day has family events that include a Fun Zone, Gem Mine, Fossil Adventure, Trading Post, Gold Rush, Live Bee Observatory and Ant Colony, as well as a general store with fresh baked pumpkin donuts and hot apple cider. With all of this wholesomeness by day is it any wonder that a little evil was needed to fill the autumn night air?

The Oasis Island of Terror is themed as the grounds of an Insane Asylum this year, inhabited by escaped lunatics and the ghosts of long dead characters from the past. The beginning of the attraction is a little slow and, as is typical with new Haunts looking to establish themselves, experiments with a few things new and touches on a few things old. The old is a brief nod to zombies, which really is running its course at so many Haunts, due in part to the Walking Dead © craze over - permeating the Halloween Season. The new is the operators taking advantage of live animals on the farm, well placed speakers within the cattails to keep the eerie mood throughout the walk, and the use of well researched stage illusions, which the owner is looking to expand upon next season. In the second half of the walk things begin to amp up beginning with a bayou style church and crypt, an encounter with a dead nun (anyone who was educated in the Catholic school system will tell you alive nuns are scary enough), and a carnival style maze with very effective creepy clowns.

For the first time in a circus themed section of a Haunt I enjoyed a very effective scare tactic utilized that mostly is found in Horror films, namely, the distancing of evil from the patron before getting up close and personal. What I mean by this is that the “maze” is a series of separated, angled walls. When you look from one side to another you see a creepy clown several walls removed appear and move very quickly from one wall to another at a distance, seemingly ignoring you, only to have the clown show up around a turn moments later in your path of travel. The timing of this type of scare is hard to master and rarely used. It is especially tiring on the actors as they are repositioning quickly throughout the night. In this case, Oasis’s actors did a terrific job in their carnival scene.

After the walk through I was afforded the opportunity to speak with the owner, Frank and his on site Haunt manager, Karen about what worked well and what needed some improvements. I was impressed to find they were very much invested in receiving constructive criticism from their patrons and were already exploring some great ideas for next season (sorry, Crawlers, no spoilers yet). Recognizing the need to introduce new themes, scenes, and innovative scares, they are exploring at least one idea that isn’t being offered at any Haunts in the area. I can’t wait to revisit next season to see if they get it up out of the grave and menacingly running. Until then, I’ll be content knowing at this Haunt is on track to explore some new territory in the world of agritainment.

For you Crypt Crawlers looking to get back to the basics of a traditional farm haunt that doesn’t rely on expensive animatronics and flames erupting from propane lines, but rather well timed scares and genuine eeriness, then slink past the Island one night this Fall.
